Virginia Ecology Adventure at The State Arboretum
The State Arboretum of Virginia occupies the central 172 acres of Blandy Experimental Farm. Using an Adventure, they were able to solve the following issues in addition to fulfilling their mission of increasing understanding through education and research on plant biology, ecology, evolution, the environmental sciences, and the manner in which all of these are used and affected by humans.
Strategic navigation
Stages of the Adventure are intentionally located in far corners of the arboretum often missed by casual visitors. Players go all the way to the back since the game requires it. Sequential stages were designed to maneuver the visitor thoughtfully around ongoing construction.
Demonstrate invasive species
One of the locations describes invasive animal species (“Plant Bullies”) via existing signage. A subsequent location takes the player to a stand of damaged trees showing actual signs of bark damage, deepening the impact on the visitor. This is more use of sequential gameplay.
Option: physical geocache
This self-guided walk culminates in a final stage that is also the location of physical geocache at the edge of their native plant trail. This is an interesting option that can be added to most Adventures. We can advise.
